Ollie Hamiel: Because, traditionally, there has been a negative stigma attached to 'mental health', one that still continues to persist into today's society. A lot of people find it very uncomfortable to talk about mental health issues in an open forum, and it is no different for the media. I know for a fact that discussions of suicide is often avoided because of a false perception that talking about suicide will encourage it or 'place the idea into the minds' of others. The media, ultimately, want viewers - people who will watch or read their product, whether it is the news or newspaper, magazine etc. - so they will avoid topics that are very taboo, such as mental health, because this will make the viewer uncomfortable and more likely to NOT watch the program. This is why a lot of mental health initiatives are now actively working to discourage this stigma with awareness programs, as this provides a more supportive environment for 'clients' to seek help....Show more
