Kenneth Blacker: Look around at local school districts or community programs. I teach an 8 week course (1 night per week for 2 hours a night) at a local school district and another one at a community college. The classes are identical in content and cater to anyone who is interested in acting... experienced or novice. The price ranges from $40 to $160 for the 8 week course. Community theaters can offer really good classes at reasonable prices as well.

Cuc Gire: Acting companies don't charge, but they also don't pay! It's usually a community service thing until they like you and then they'll share some of the $15,000 grant and $300 a week they take in at the door with YOU and the other 15 people. That's like $1,020 a year per member of the company! That's side street theater.10 people flopping on the sofas, and oldest of the group get the private rooms, you all take cold showers because ! you couldn't afford to pay the gas bill for 6 months so they shut it off.You don't think Shakespear and his troup ate at Applebee's do you!And don't think the union shops are much better. Yea for your $2,000 Equity card and $100 a year dues you get $1,900 a week the Civic Center for rehearsals and a one month run. So after 6 weeks you are unemployed again with $15,000 in your pocket and you're out looking for a job and you can't take NON UNION work. The current Writer's Guild strike has ship wrecked most day players and weeklys. If that strike isn't resolved by March they will cancel the season and that means MOST of the SAG and WGAW workers who expected to make money in 2008 won't see me, if anything.Right now all there is is commercial, features already written and daytime soaps (and that's AFTRA not SAG)There is going to be a lot of starving actors this year, bouncing checks because they did't get the $10,000 they expected to doing two or three weeks series work like t! hey always do!They cancel the season, NO TV SAG or Writers wor! k until September, that's 6 months with no pay thanks to a strike. And that's your life in show biz.SAG actors can do side street theater for $150 or $200 a week but that's a far cry from the $3,000 to $6,000 they make doing one week on a TV show...Show more
